Pocket Monsters – Sapphire is the first game in the Pocket Monsters series for the Game Boy Advance. The player controls a young boy or girl as they explore the world, catch and train Pocket Monsters, and battle other trainers in competitive battles. The game begins with the player waking up in their home town. They are greeted by their mother, who tells them that Professor Oak has sent them a letter asking them to come to the lab and help him with some research. The player then sets out on their journey, meeting new friends along the way and catching Pocket Monsters. The player can battle other trainers in competitive battles, or help Professor Oak with his research. In the competitive battles, the player must defeat their opponents by using their Pocket Monsters to capture all of their Pokémon. In the research missions, the player must help Professor Oak collect items or defeat specific Pokémon. The player can also explore the world, and find hidden treasures. They can also visit the Pokémon Centers to heal their Pokémon, or buy new items for them. The player can also visit the local Pokémon Mart to buy new Pocket Monsters. The game is over when the player defeats the Elite Four and becomes the new Pokémon League Champion..
