The game begins with Max Payne’s wife and child being killed in a car bombing. Max is traumatized by the experience and decides to retire from the police force. Six years later, Max is contacted by a private detective named John Donovan who needs his help investigating a series of murders. The victims are all high-profile people, and Donovan believes that Max’s experience as a police officer may help him solve the case. Max begins investigating the murders, and soon realizes that they are related to the car bombing that destroyed his family. He also discovers that the killer is a man named Rodrigo Santoro, a powerful drug lord who is also responsible for the death of Donovan’s wife. Santoro is determined to kill Max, and the only way to stop him is to track him down and shoot him in the head..
